IAFSM offers Basic Laser Scanning Recertification to professionals seeking to maintain their certification through demonstrated technical competency, continuing education, and ongoing application of laser scanning technology.

Recertification Requirements

Practical Laser Scanning Submission

Candidates must provide a forensically sound laser scanning dataset. Actual casework is preferred; however, exemplar or mock scenes are acceptable when they reasonably represent forensic casework.

Written Examination

A written examination will be scheduled between the candidate and an IAFSM BLSC instructor.

Continuing Education

Candidates must document qualifying conference attendance or at least 30 hours of relevant continuing education within the previous five years.

LASER SCANNING DATA SET

The submission must include:

  • At least 10 scan setups, including imaging.

  • Accurate scan registration and associated registration error reporting.

  • Cross sections of registered data demonstrating valid scan alignment.

  • A narrative report describing the collection process and the creation of the submitted dataset and exhibit.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

Provide continuing education certificates documenting at least 30 hours of relevant training within the previous five years.

AGENCY LETTER

Writing On Paper

A letter on agency or company letterhead confirming continued use of and access to laser scanning equipment and software.

RECERTIFICATION PATH

The road to recertification follows a structured process designed to confirm the knowledge and proficiency in forensic laser scanning techniques achieved in the Basic Laser Scanner Certification Course.
